Tryavna

Tryavna is a town preferred by tourists for its clean mountain air and unique Renaissance architecture. The guests of the town will enjoy their excursions to various villages and huts, scattered in the vicinity.

Tryavna is situated 400 meters above the sea level. A good road and railroad network connects the town with all farther spots of the country.

Feeling the beauty, with faith towards centuries-old traditions and love towards the Bulgarian Heritage, the Tryavna masters gain popularity in the field of building, woodcarving and icon painting, which they handle to perfection and transform into art. Thus comes into being, develops and flourishes the oldest Renaissance Art school in the Bulgarian land - the Tryavna school.

In Tryavna and the surrounding vicinity there are many places where one can find the unique beauty of the Renaissance period. Such are the architectural and historical ensembles The Old Square, P. R. Slaveikov street, Kachaunska neighbourhood and the place Tepavitsite, Skortsite village, the temples St. Archangel Michael and St. George, the unique museums - Daskalov's house, Raykov's house, Angel Kunchev's and P. R. Slaveikov's houses, Staroto Shkolo (the old school) and the Museum of Icon Painting and Wood-carving, art exhibitions of Dimitur and Nikola Kazakovi, Nikolai Maistorov and Ivan Kolev, the Gubenskies' collection of pictures.

Dryanovo Monastery

Dryanovo Monastery of St. Archangel Michael was founded in the l2th century and is in close proximity to the summer residence of the Bulgarian rulers from the Assen dynasty. It was for several times destroyed during the Ottoman domination. In its present-day site the monastery exists since 1845. The main church was built in 1861. Almost ruined after the Ottoman Turks' invasion, the monastery buildings were restored in 1880. Next to the church is the ossuary raised in memory of the perished insurgents. In the monastery there is a museum collection with exhibits from all historical epochs including neolithic finds from a nearby cave.

Bacho Kiro cave

Bacho Kiro cave has three levels. After a low entrance, several large caverns follow, connected by 20m high passages, all with only very few speleothems. The highlight is the huge hall Haidushko Sboriste (Hall of the Rebels' Gathering).

This cave, or at least its entrance region, was visited by paleolithic man. The remanins of cave bear, deer, wild horse, rhinoceros, as well as well-formed flint knifes and bone spikes were discovered by an English archaeologic team. This pieces are now in the British Museum in London.

Nearby are many other sights, like the waterfall, a karst spring and the newly opened Dryanovo Eco Trial. The attractive nature trail follows the gorge of the Dryanovo River for 3km. There are several platforms for bird and game observations as well as picnic areas.

Bojenci

An idyllic village nestling in the folds of the Balkan Range, 16 km from the town of Gabrovo, which time seems to have lulled to sleep centuries ago. The shutters of the workshops have been closed, the blacksmiths have stopped hammering, the hearths have gone out. The well in the square. the wax workshop and the St. Elija Church are almost 200 years old. Until the end of the 19-th century Bojenci has been an economic, administrative, educational and spiritual center for the surrounding villages. Today, there are 100 houses left, built 100 - 250 years ago.

Veliko Tarnovo

Veliko Tarnovo is located at 250km from the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia near the Balkan mountain The town was founded at the foot of the Northern Fore-Balkan Range. Historians date it back to 4th millenium B.C. The town of Veliko Tarnovo has inherited centuries-old Prehistoric, Thracian and Antique culture and in 1185 it became a center of the Bulgarian Uprising against Byzantine domination and the capital of the restored Bulgarian state. The medieval town of Tarnovo was rapidly expanding and developed into the strongest Bulgarian fortress during the 12-14th cc. It became the most significant political, economic, cultural and religious center of Bulgaria. The Tarnovo Schools of Literature and Arts were established and developed here. Remarkable architectural monuments were created; miniature and monumental painting, literature, plastic arts and crafts achieved high artistic level.
